Meet our youngest Mensa member!

Can you guess how old our youngest Mensa Philippines member is?

Hint: She's currently in Grade 1 at a school for gifted children in Quezon City.

Nope, not seven years old. Not even six.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to five year old Alrescha Mikaela D. Gabriana, or simply Reese!

Reese is the precocious daughter of Mensa members Bamm Gabriana and Rochelle Derilo, which probably goes to show what can happen when two Mensans collide.

Bamm describes Reese as "hyperactive and likes playing in the monkey bars... always tumbles and does cartwheels in bed, and likes to climb up me and stand on my shoulders."

Kinetic energy aside, Reese's favorite subjects are (surprise, surprise) math and science.

So how did she do it? Reese took a Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI) test at her school, under the guidance of a supervising psychologist. She was 5 years and 6 days at the time of testing. The school then prepared a certification as proof of her passing the test at a Mensa-level IQ score, the original documents of which was then sent to Mensa Philippines for validation with the Testing Director of Mensa International.

And the rest is history! Welcome aboard, Reese! Now let's help her find her some Mensa playmates!

March 9: Are You REALLY Intelligent?

In our third Mensa Brown Bag Session, Dr. Frances Magtoto (fondly known as Lia among us Mensans) presents three very different theories on intelligence.

The question now is, How well would you fare for each of these theories?

Dr. Lia challenges you to test yourself according to the criteria of these different perspectives to discover the shocking truth:

Would you still be classified as highly intelligent under these different scenarios?

Join us for our third Mensa Brown Bag Session on the second Saturday of March, March 9, for an eye-opening session with our freshly minted PhD in Special Education, Lia Mijares, as she walks you through the different ways of viewing intelligence. And then see how intelligent you really are in these alternate viewpoints.

The 3rd Mensa Brown Bag Session
Date: March 9, 2013

Grad 101, Graduate School
St. Joseph's College
E. Rodriguez Avenue, Quezon City

Dr. Frances "Lia" Magtoto obtained her bachelor and doctorate degrees in Special Education from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and her masters degree in Basic Education Teaching from the Ateneo de Manila University. Previous posts include being a faculty member of both Poveda Learning Centre and UP Diliman. She currently serves as a part-time lecturer at the Graduate School of St. Joseph’s College, Quezon City. Dimpy Does D'Brown Bag!

Dimpy highlighting a point

The second Mensa Brown Bag Session happened last Saturday over at The Coffee Academy at Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City, and delivering up front was Mensa PR Director Dimpy Jazmines, on a talk entitled "Organizational Communication (and How to Make it Work in Yours)".

In an hour-long talk, Dimpy laid out the rationale behind what is now a growing trend for businesses, namely the implementation of organizational communication initiatives. Dimpy explained the difference between this and traditional public relations, emphasizing that organizational communication was more concerned with culture-building and organizational development through messages and meanings.

Dimpy then gave the Mensans some examples of initiatives that he has helped implement in his position as human resources consultant for Bayan Communications (aside: isn't it cool how he's implementing communications initiatives inside a communications company?) and SkyCable.

And as the talk went on, the Mensans were also treated to complementary cups of terrific coffee courtesy of the venue's master brewer Raoul.

In all, the second Mensa Brown Bag Session was a wonderful and informative success, and we thank Dimpy for sharing his knowledge with us!

Beachineering in Quezon Province!

One weekend of roughing it - no cars, no aircon, no fancy resorts. And we promise you will get sunburned...at least to some degree.

We're calling all the adventurous souls of Mensa to join us on Feb 16, 2013 as we explore Borawan, Puting Buhangin and Dampalitan beaches in Quezon Province for Php 900* only!

Borawan is called as such because of its beauty that is said to combine 2 of the best beaches in the country - the white sandy beaches of Boracay, and the limestone rock formations of Palawan.

Dampalitan beach has an Anawangin/Nagsasa Cove vibe feel to it with pine trees, but interspersed with palm trees. We can pitch a tent and stay there for the night. (You may rent a cottage, too, but that's not as fun as being in a tent or a hammock)

Puting Buhangin has the whitest beach of the three and has a cave we can explore called Kwebang Lampas.

If you think we know the place well, we don't. It's an adventure for us, too.  And since these beaches are not well-known yet, expect a virgin (or almost virgin) beach. And it's quite possible that we'll be the only ones there!

Sign up quickly cause we'll only be accepting entries up to Feb 9!

We also recommend those who will sign up to attend a pre-trip orientation on Feb 9, 2013. Venue is the Coffee Academy, 3rd floor, CCA (Cravings), 287 Katipunan, Quezon City, right after the Mensa Brown Bag event. We will gladly guide you on what to pack, how to pack and other essential things you have to know for this trip. As a downpayment, please prepare P500 on the day of the orientation.

Leaving your comfort behind might be too much, but remember, sometimes it doesn't have to be fun to be fun.
